Goodbye to the traditional website: online shopping migrates to social networks

Eight out of 10 consumers expect most online purchases to be made online by 2030

Social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook are expected to become the primary online shopping channels by 2030. This is the expectation of eight out of ten consumers, according to the 2025 E-Commerce Trend Report, conducted by DHL eCommerce based on insights from 24,000 online shoppers across 24 global markets, including Brazil.

According to the study, traditional e-commerce websites are already being replaced by social media when it comes to shopping. Consumers are turning to apps not only to discover new products but also to complete their purchases. DHL eCommerce reports that 73% of Brazilian shoppers say they have already made a purchase through social media.

The report also reveals that 82% of Brazilian consumers say viral trends and social buzz influence their purchasing decisions.

AI Driven Shopping

The advances in generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on e-commerce are also highlighted in the report. Nine out of ten shoppers in Brazil want retailers to offer AI-powered shopping tools.

Among the most desired features are virtual try-ons, AI-powered shopping assistants, and voice-enabled product search.

Voice-command shopping is already on the rise: 44% of Brazilian consumers make hands-free purchases. As digital expectations increase, so does the demand for intuitive, tech-enabled shopping journeys that blend functionality with enjoyment.

Delivery and return logistics

While consumers are embracing social media for shopping and AI for the experience, delivery and return options remain key reasons for cart abandonment. Shoppers are not willing to compromise on convenience, flexibility, or control.

According to the report: 91% of Brazilian consumers say they will abandon their purchase if their preferred delivery option is not available. And 87% will stop the purchase if the return process doesn’t meet their expectations.

“It’s important to recognize that there isn’t just one type of online consumer or one kind of market. The reasons for cart abandonment can vary widely. Our E-Commerce Trend Report analyzes the trends and developments shaping online shopping around the world to help our clients grow their businesses. Logistics plays a crucial role in this process, and we see ourselves as a vital partner—offering our customers insights, know-how, and tailored solutions to drive their success,” said Pablo Ciano, CEO of DHL eCommerce.

Trust is also critical: 82% of Brazilian shoppers say they won’t buy from a retailer if they don’t trust the delivery and returns provider.

Sustainability and the circular economy

Another key finding is that sustainability has evolved from a brand differentiator to a core consumer demand. In Brazil, 83% of consumers now consider sustainability when shopping online. And it goes beyond packaging or shipping—40% have actively abandoned their carts due to sustainability concerns.

Brazilian consumers are also embracing more circular consumption models, with half opting for second-hand or refurbished goods, motivated by both environmental values and cost efficiency.

Additionally, 65% of argentine consumers express willingness to participate in recycling or buyback programs offered by retailers. These behaviors point to a growing expectation that brands should not only reduce their footprint but also empower consumers to make more sustainable choices.
